Call for participation in research about audio games for blind and partially sighted players

Thanks for taking the time to read through this letter. We are a group of Master Computing and Information Science students from Utrecht University and we need a group of people to participate in research about audio games. We are conducting this research for the course Sound and Music Technology and wanted to focus on audio games because not a lot of research has been done in this field. However, we can imagine that a lot of people who are visually impaired would still love to play various games. So, it would be very useful to conduct more research into this field so that even more fun games can be made. That is why we wanted to focus on audio games. These are games that can be played using sound only. So, you do not need to see anything to play the game. However, we cannot conduct this research without your help!

Playing the game will only take about 5 minutes. After that, you will need to answer a questionnaire, which will also take about 3 to 5 minutes to complete. At the beginning of the game, it will be explained what you will have to do. However, to make it easier for you, we have also typed the instructions in a separate document that you can open later. Furthermore, it is important for you to know that all your data will be anonymized in this research. Participating in this research is completely voluntary and you will not be rewarded. You are also free to quit at any moment throughout this research if you wish you do not want to participate anymore. However, full participation will be highly appreciated. Instructions Game

So, you have decided to participate in the research. Thanks, we highly appreciate it. You can start the audio game with a hyperlink later. Before the game begins, you will hear some instructions. These instructions are also typed out at the end of this document. After that, you can play 5 slightly different versions of the game after each other. Make sure that you play all versions of the game.

The very first round is a practice round. After that, you can play the rest of the versions of the game. Make sure that you play the game while wearing headphones or earplugs because it is necessary that you can clearly hear in which ear a sound is being played. We also want to ask you some questions afterwards. That is why after playing the game a personal ID number will be presented on the screen, which you can read using your screen reader. This number is needed for the questionnaire. The questionnaire can be found in a separate document, which is called Questionnaire.

Now you can click on the following link to play the audio game: research.djkhas.com. When you click on next, the game will start. You must press a key to start the game.

Instructions at the beginning of the game

Welcome, and thank you for joining this experiment. This game will only use audio. You as the player are a car on the road. The road has 2 lanes. You start in the left lane. To go to the right lane, press the J key. To go the left lane, press the F key. Obstacles will come towards you. A beeping noise will play in your left ear if an obstacle is in the left lane. If an obstacle is in the right lane, you will hear the sound in your right ear. The higher the pitch of the noise, the closer the obstacle is, and it is your job to avoid getting hit. You will play 5 rounds in total, and this should take 5 minutes. To hear the explanation again press F or J. To start, press the Space Bar.

Questionnaire

You just completed 5 versions of an audio game that tests the effects of the tempo of audio cues on your performance in the game. Now you can fill out the survey. This will only take about 3 to 5 minutes of your time. For answering this survey, you only need the ID that was given to you at the end of the game.
